DISCOVERY Children’s Museum at the Donald W. Reynolds Discovery Center readies for Grand Opening

March 4, 2013 – LAS VEGAS – Officials from DISCOVERY Children’s Museum will open the doors to the all new museum Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 10 am. The first 1,500 guests will receive free admission to the museum located at the Donald W. Reynolds Discovery Center in Symphony Park adjacent to the Smith Center.

 

“After nearly 10 years in the making, the children’s museum is ready to take the next step in continuing our mission to serve the families of Southern Nevada,” said Linda Quinn, CEO of DISCOVERY Children’s Museum. “The new Discovery Children’s Museum is a realization of a years-long relocation plan and sets a new standard for interactive education in Las Vegas, truly establishing this organization as a community cornerstone. And, it helps redefine Las Vegas as a city that values culture and the arts and, most importantly, its children.”

 

Three stories tall in stature, the museum 58,000-square-foot building will be home to nine themed exhibition halls totaling 26,000 square feet of all-new interactive exhibits that demonstrate the museum’s core educational values of science, arts and culture and early childhood development programming. The new museum will also will house a 5,000 square-foot traveling exhibition gallery, large enough to accommodate major exhibitions from the nation’s leading hands-on museums.

 

Opening in the exhibition hall and running through May 15, 2013 is Discover the Real George Washington: New Views from Mount Vernon. Learn more about the character of “The Father of Our Country” and discover a refreshing new perspective on his life from young surveyor to accomplished entrepreneur.  Approximately 60 original objects associated with the Washingtons are on display including George Washington’s teeth; many of the objects have never been seen outside of Mount Vernon.  The exhibit is interspersed with short films by the History Channel, interactive computer touch screens and three life-sized models of George Washington.

Museum admission and hours include:

$12.00 per ticket for ages 1 to 99
Free: Members and children younger than one year old; adults 100 years or older. Children 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult; 18 years or older.  Membership packages are available.

Tuesday through Friday: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Saturday: 10 am – 5 pm
Sunday: 12 pm – 5 pm
