CommUNITY Challenge Fund
We need you now more than ever. In order for DISCOVERY Children’s Museum to resume its mission of delivering diverse educational experiences and help close the learning gaps that resulted from the closure of schools, your help and support are absolutely vital.
DISCOVERY is so excited to welcome everyone back to your Museum. We are grateful to all of our visitors and members who participated in our reopening survey that helped us understand what would make you feel safe and comfortable visiting the Museum once it reopened. For a look at the comprehensive cleaning, safety, and reopening plan that we developed based on the survey results, please visit discoverykidslv.org/health-and-safety.
One of the major decisions we made in order to ensure that the Museum could reopen with the appropriate protective measures in place for those that visit was to dramatically reduce our occupancy. Under our reopening framework, we will be only allowing 175 visitors into our 26,000 square-feet of galleries in our 60,000 square-foot facility at a time to ensure for physical distancing and proper cleaning of our exhibit components.
Ticket sales comprise 60% of the revenue needed to fund the diverse educational programing we deliver to the community. That’s why, during this time of rebuilding, we will be relying on the support of our community more than ever, and specifically, supporters like you.
To help us sustain our leadership in the community as we carefully reopen our doors, we have created The CommUNITY Challenge Fund which has been seeded by a challenge grant from a generous anonymous donor with a gift of $200,000. Our goal is to match those funds with an additional $200,000 before September 30. We hope you will consider helping us meet the challenge and fill the gap in our earned revenue streams by making a gift of $50, $250, $1,000 or more to ensure that we can keep supporting our community’s children—especially those most in need.
We recognize that the COVID-19 crisis has affected everyone differently, but please know that your support in any amount will not only be matched, but will make a tremendous impact on the lives of children in our community.
We want to provide some guidance from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. For anyone who wants to support DCM or any other charities at this time, there are some changes that might benefit you:
- If you don’t itemize your income tax deductions, you can now deduct up to $300 in donations. Previously, only those who itemized were able to use a charitable deduction. For the rest of 2020, an individual will be able to deduct up to $300, even if you don’t itemize. This deduction can be used for contributions only of cash (not stock) to qualified charitable organizations.
- You can now deduct up to 100% of your adjusted gross income for charitable deductions. Formerly, an individual could deduct up to 60% of their adjusted gross income (AGI) for charitable deductions of cash. The stimulus package lifts that restriction, so that an individual can deduct up to 100% of their AGI for the year 2020. Also, any contributions in excess of total AGI may be carried forward for up to five additional years. This may not be used to fund Donor Advised Funds.
- Corporate charitable deduction limits have been increased to 25% of taxable income. The Act temporarily lifts the cap on a corporation’s charitable deductions from 10% to 25% of taxable income and raises the cap on charitable contributions of food inventory from 15% to 25% of taxable income.

Bequests, charitable remainder trusts, IRA charitable rollover gifts, or designation of the Museum as a beneficiary of a retirement or life insurance plan are all ways to support DISCOVERY through planned giving. All conversations will be held in strict confidence.
